What you'll find here

Picking a reel or a kayak means sorting through a lot of models that look alike on paper, and that eats up evenings you'd rather spend on the water. I do that part for you. Each guide puts several models side by side and tells you which to get, who it's for and where it falls short.

I give more weight to gear that holds up for several seasons than to a long list of features. And when safety is part of the choice, as with how stable a kayak is, it comes before price.

No paid picks

Good Hookset is independent, and no brand pays to be in a guide or to rank higher. When you buy through my links, Amazon pays me a commission, and that's the site's only income. More in the affiliate disclosure.

Who writes it

I run Good Hookset on my own and write under the pen name Ben Dawson.
